1. Can I apply for funding after the project has started?
No. Hardly any funders will consider retrospective funding awards. Even if you
have submitted a funding application make sure that you don’t start the project
before an award is confirmed in writing as this will undoubtedly jeopardise your
application.
Some funders will issue something called a ‘Without Prejudice Permission’ which
gives you the go ahead to start prior to the award being decided, but this is very
much considered on an individual basis and must be discussed with the relevant
funder project manager beforehand.

2. Can limited companies apply for funding?
This is very dependant on the nature of the company. For example a football club
that operates as a limited company rather than as a members club may be
eligible for some types of funding, whereas a commercial company will not be.
Some funders will consider support for Community Interest or not for profit
companies but is always best to check with the relevant funding body before you
embark upon the business and effort of preparing a funding bid.

4. How long do funding applications usually take to be assessed before a decision is made?
This is the million dollar question, isn’t it?
The answer really depends on how complete the application is that’s submitted,
how high on the funders priorities the project actually is and how good the
project may be. Supporting information has to be clear, concise and accurate,
and of course that’s exactly what we’re here to help you with. Applications that
are well put together and which require very little extra information during the
assessment usually have a much quicker turnaround – makes sense really
doesn’t it?
As a guide though, small grants usually take about 8-10 weeks from submission
to get a decision, whereas larger projects can be anything upwards of 20 weeks.

5. Can I apply for funding for a capital project if I haven’t got planning permission?
Usually the answer is no. Occasionally, some funders will carry out an
assessment whilst waiting for a planning decision, but ordinarily you must have
secured the planning consent prior to submission of your bid. This stands to
reason, as funders cannot be expected to let their assessors spend time
assessing applications for projects that may never actually be able to go ahead.
Therefore, this means that you are going to have to risk some funds on getting
your project to the planning stage.
